In the HotForWords video lesson floccinaucinihilipilification at 1:17, Marina says; "nihili which came from the word nihil which in Latin meant, nothing." How dare it mean nothing. It's gotta mean something. How can the word exist if it doesn't mean nothing. Could it mean anything, such as any thing or must it mean nothing as in no thing. HotForWords must investigate nothing. No, I mean, do investigate something which is nothing. Who's on first? :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMrk9ea1m0g#t=01m17s
Jan 26, 2010 4:54pmLets do nothing...."Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the "sons") and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in its traditional spirituality."...good suggestion!!
